T-MOBILE G2 CONFIRMED SPECS RELEASE

HTC has posted the specification sheet of the upcoming T-Mobile G2 on their official site. The device is running on Android 2.2 (Froyo) with an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM 7230 processor. Other features include a 3.7-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen with 480x800 resolution, 4GB ROM, 512 RAM, 5-megapixel camera with auto focus and flash, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth support. The device also comes with a 1,300 mAh battery which provides up to 590 minutes of talk time on a GSM network. The phone is expected to be released soon.

The Android vs. Apple battle has officially made its way into the world of tablets.

Samsung took the wraps off its new Samsung Galaxy Tab Android tablet on Thursday. The Galaxy Tab is a 7-inch slate built to complete with the current tablet king, Apple's thus-far-unchallenged iPad.

Sure, there have been a couple other Android tablets on the market already (see Streak, Dell), but the Galaxy Tab is the first that truly qualifies as a contender.

Like the iPad, the Galaxy Tab comes with different options for internal storage. It also, however, supports up to 32GB of expandable storage; Apple's device is limited to the internal space only.

The Galaxy Tab has two cameras -- a rear-facing 3.2-megapixel camera and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video chatting -- while the current models of the iPad have none. Samsung claims up to 7 hours of video playback for the Galaxy Tab; Apple says its iPad can last up to 10 hours.

In terms of software, the Galaxy Tab's Android 2.2 operating system gives the device a number of selling points Apple's iPad can't claim, including full-featured multitasking, support for Adobe Flash, and unrestricted access to applications (Apple is notorious for censoring all sorts of material -- ranging from political satire to swimsuit-clad women -- and also for banning apps that provide functions such as free tethering and customization of the operating system).

Google music service has iTunes in sight

Reuters reported that Google's VP of engineering Andy Rubin had has been conducting talks with record labels. Record insiders are excited about the possibility of Apple and Google challenging each other on the digital music front.

According to the publication's sources, Google's music service is set to launch "before Christmas". However, Google has yet to sign a deal with record labels yet.

Music is the latest battleground for Google as Apple has held a 7 year control with iTunes, which holds 70 percent of all U.S. digital music sales. But with Google claiming to activate 200,000 devices a day, they might already have a foothold in the digital music market.

"Finally here's an entity with the reach, resources and wherewithal to take on iTunes as a formidable competitor by tying it into search and Android mobile platform. What you'll have is a very powerful player in the market that's good for the music business," said an anonymous record label executive.

The latest Nokia X3 sidesteps that tidily by offering both a touch screen and a traditional 12-button keypad. This is the first phone from Nokia to offer such a combination. Despite two sets of controls, though, the X3 Touch and Type is one of Nokia’s thinnest devices: it’s 9.6mm deep, 106mm tall, 48mm wide and weighs just 78g. It packs brushed aluminum cover and a standard alphanumeric keypad. The Nokia X3-02 also packs excellent connectivity with WLAN, 3G with HSPA, Bluetooth and micro USB all on board. The music fans will also appreciate the 3.5mm audio jack.

The main features of the new Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type is a 2.4-inch touchscreen display with resolution of 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA). The new handset has a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with video recording function, FM radio, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, 16 MB of internal memory, a microSD card slot (up to 16GB), TV out, and 3.5mm audio jack.

The X3 Touch and type will launch in Q3 2010 and will retail for approximately €125, excluding taxes and subsidies. It will be available in China, Ireland & UK, Russia, Australia & New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, Spain & Portugal, France, Mexico and Saudi & Yemen. Other markets will follow later. In some selected market, it will be offered with Ovi Music Unlimited, allowing access to a library of over 11 million tracks. Battery life is rated at five hours talk time or 17 days on standby.

Review of the Blackberry Bold 9700

The latest addition to the phone which is of considerable note is the optical track pad. Possibly a salute to the touchscreen phones that abound (including the BlackBerry Storm), the optical track pad sits flush against the body of the phone, seemingly innocuous. It is deceptive though as the pad is quite a bit more powerful that its predecessor. It supports swipe gestures and manages a significantly faster navigation of the phone in general.

There is a 3.2 megapixel camera, complete with an LED flash. Again, this is step up from the previous Bold which only had a 2 megapixel camera. While the BlackBerry isn't meant to snap art-quality pictures, 3.2 megapixels are lower than average in the phone market.

The screen is high-resolution with 480x360 pixels supporting HVGA.

Connectivity (9/10)

The BlackBerry has every conceivable connectivity option, including GPS, GPRS, EDGE, 3G, and Bluetooth. The T-Mobile version of the device also supports WiFi calling; an option that will reduce spending on call minutes a great deal.

Performance (9/10)

The 256 MB built-in application memory is definitely improved as it as doubled in size from the first Bold. Application loading and transitions are visibly faster as a result. The processor is quite a bit stronger as well, so the overall operation of the phone is much snappier than before.

Value for Money (8/10)

The phone accomplishes what it sets out to do admirably, so it is definitely value for money. The only changes that would have made a positive difference are that the screen is quite small and that the camera could have potentially been better.

They both have built in 3.5mm stereo with headset compatibility, integrated earpiece/microphone, speaker phone and Bluetooth ready. However, one has a touch screen keyboard (allows you to type by touch) vs. a QWERTY keyboard (allows you to type on a regular keyboard) on the other. The built in microphone is a great asset to both phones because it allows users to send voice e-mails. This comes in handy when you are in a hurry, don?t feel up to typing or want to give a message in person but are unable to.

They both have media player which allows you to watch video or audio formatted programs, allow you to edit your Microsoft word or PowerPoint slides (copy and past, adjust font and other formatting) and doubles as an iPod allowing users to create their own playist list for easy listening.

The Blackberry Storm and the Blackberry Bold are very similar with few differences. Overall the Blackberry Storm offers a little more. It offers better picture resolution, more digital camera MPS, a longer battery life and more built in memory. However, if you don?t like touch screens and prefer the usual keyboard style, the Blackberry Bold offers it. There are such minute differences between the two; one would have to begin to look at styles, colors, prices and services to help them make a choice.

APPLE iPHONE 4 IN CHINA SET?

China Unicom will be launching Apple's popular mobile device, the Apple iPhone 4 for the Chinese market on 25 September 2010. The device is currently equipped with both 3G and WiFi. It appears that China Unicom has relaxed their policy to encourage China's homegrown wireless standard - WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure (WAPI). According to Reuters, China Unicom will offer the 16GB iPhone 4 with a two year contract at 3,899 yuan (1 yuan = RM0.46) and a monthly fee of 96 yuan. Similarly, the device is free if the subscriber opts for a two-years plan while paying 286 yuan monthly fees. Alternatively, buyer could purchase the phone without contract at the price of 4,999 yuan for the 16GB model and 5,999 yuan for the 32GB model. These devices could also be purchased from Apple stores in China.

Blackberry Bold or Nokia E71 - which one is better?

Released within a month of each other, the Blackberry 9000, better known as the Blackberry Bold (May 2008) and the Nokia E71 (June 2008) are obvious rival smartphones from these perennial rival smartphone makers as they look, feel, and function very much alike.

Both devices are just about equally sized, at 114 mm x 66 mm x 14 mm for the Blackberry and 114 mm x 57 mm x 10 mm for the Nokia. And both weigh just about the same with the Blackberry weighing in at 133 g to a slightly lighter Nokia's 127 g.

Both devices have a QWERTY keypad occupying the bottom half of the face of the device with a small display screen (2.6 in on the Blackberry, 2.36 in on the Nokia) above it. Interestingly, the display screens on each device possess a quality superior to that of their counterpart. The Blackberry has better resolution, at 480 x 320 pixels to its competitor's 320 x 240 pixels; but the Nokia has more colors, at 16 million to its competitors meager 65,000.

Then, for a matter of simple preference, the Blackberry Bold's primary navigation is a trackball whereas the Nokia E71 uses a 5-way scroll key. Also a simple matter of preference, the Blackberry runs on the Blackberry OS, the Nokia on the Symbian OS.

Other similarities amongst these two candybar competitors are their built-in GPS with mapping capabilities (the Bold using Blackberry Maps, the E71 using Nokia Maps - each coming preinstalled), as well as voice dialing, photo calling, video calling, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP, and speakerphone. They also both operate on AT&T's EDGE network and support HSDPA and 3G.

In terms of multimedia features they each have built in digital cameras, but the Blackberry Bold's is only 2 megapixels while the Nokia E71's is 3 megapixels. Both cameras, however, have LED flash and video recording capabilities. Both devices also have a built-in MP3 player.

Also worth noting, along these same lines, is that unlike the Blackberry (or most smartphones, for that matter) the Nokia does not have a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack but rather a 2.5 mm audio jack, making headphone and speaker compatibility a bigger issue with the Nokia. The Nokia, however, has an infrared port while the Blackberry does not.

You can view Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents on both devices, but you can only edit them on the Blackberry.

The battery on the Bold gives up to 5 hours of talk time and 310 hours of standby time. The battery on the Nokia gives up to 10 1/2 hours of talk time in 2G or 4 1/2 hours in 3G, and 410 hours of standby time in 2G or 480 hours in 3G.

Deciding between these two devices is a tough call, and may come down to extraneous features such as the availability of preferred 3rd party apps. Or you may just prefer the Blackberry operating system to Symbian. You may also lean towards the Blackberry Bold if you want to be able to edit Microsoft Office docs, though you might lean towards the Nokia E71 if you'd rather take crisper digital photos. Really these two devices are quite comparable.

BLACKBERRY STORM 3 WITH BIGGEST SCREEN!

The BlackBerry Storm and its sequel didn't do so hot when RIM was trying to break into the touch phone market. But as they say, third time's the charm - the first BlackBerry Storm 3 photos hit the interwebs and they look like an improvement.

The BlackBerry Storm 3 reportedly has a bigger screen than its predecessors - 3.7" unit looks much roomier than the 3.25" screens on the Storm and Storm 2. There's no info on the resolution though, hopefully it's got a bump from the 360x480 pixels resolution of the previous versions.

The Storm 3 also features Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity, says the rumor-mill, and 8GB of built-in memory. There's an optical trackpad this time around.

A leaked slide from July allegedly had info on the Storm 3 - BlackBerry OS 6 (and the WebKit browser it brings), 512MB RAM and support for microSD cards up to 32GB. The camera is listed as 5MP and there's Wi-Fi 802.11n support. SurePress is back too, even though it was dropped for the BlackBerry Torch 9800.

So far so good - but here's where things start getting iffy. Check out the slide - there doesn't seem to be a trackpad. And there's that gossip that the Storm2 we'll be actually getting an almost silent refresh (the one on the slide) so it stays as a current model, while the real BlackBerry Storm 3 is the device pictured in hand above. So for now, take everything with a big pinch of salt.

THE NOKIA N8 RELEASE DATE

Nokia has given an official date for the Symbian^3 flagship, the N8 for the UK. The phone will be the first of two major Symbian updates, to bring Nokia's smartphone back as a contender. The Nokia N8 is available for pre-order and will go on sale at the Nokia Online Shop for £429 SIM free or on-contract from £35 per month. The phone will also hit selected stores on Oct 1st in the UK. Nokia hasn't announced the N8's availability elsewhere, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for updates.

Froyo update for Samsung I9000 Galaxy S delayed until October

If you were counting the days until the Froyo update hits the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S we have some bad news - you’ll have to count longer than expected. The update has been delayed in Spain and India and possibly other regions too.

There’s no official press release yet, instead the bad news trickled through Facebook (the Spanish page) and Twitter (the Samsung India account).

It’s not clear what other regions will have the Android 2.2 Froyo update for the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S delayed, but other European countries are probably affected too.

Anyway, the release date for the Froyo update has been moved to late October. The update will be available through Samsung Kies.

If you can't wait, there are other ways to update the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S to Android v2.2 Froyo. We've updated ours and so far it's been working quite well.
